It's heart-breaking when the Scarecrow tries to sell his place beside Dorothy- "I won't be any trouble because I can't think. The Scarecrow keeps viewing himself as a servant even though the situations force out his cleverness and valor. The Scarecrow represents a horrible historical phenomena that when someone is made into a slave and put in chains, one of the first things that happens is that the slave degrades his mind and abilities because the slave has been so profoundly limited by what he can do. However if he's nailed to a pike and unable to marshal his own straw-like body, let alone outside resources, he can't even protect his own body from the crows nipping away at him to slowly mutilate him until Dorothy arrived.

The Scarecrow was given a job but even though he can move around and figure out plans if he has the space to do so, he was stripped of those abilities to try to execute his job to protect the corn as a prisoner. I tried to limit the Wicked thinking because this is about Wizard of Oz, though. However, I am also a big fan of Wicked, the musical and it's influenced how I see Wizard of Oz. The Busby Berkley musicals that I did see and like ( 42nd Street and Annie Get Your Gun), I saw on the stage and didn't have that film director/choreographer at the helm.īusby Berkley did have a minor directing role in Wizard of Oz- so I'm hoping this counts as a worthy character meme for velvetwhip. However, I hadn't seen a lot of his musicals. Velvetwhip prompted me for a Busby Berkley musical.
